Patricia A. Ruddy, M. Ed., MFT's therapeutic treatment modality encompasses an eclectic style heavily based on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Reality Therapy and Brief/Solution Focused Therapy. Under these principles it is believed that if people are prone to learning self-defeating ideas then they are capable of unlearning them.
By correcting defective thinking, excessive or inappropriate reactions can be altered. The need for an identity as a distinct and unique individual is present in all people. A "success" identity gives meaning to life and results in mental health; "failure" identity leads to mental distress. A person must assume responsibility for present behavior regardless of past life experiences.
An integral part of her work with clients includes establishing a collaborative and therapeutic alliance, identifying goals, and developing solutions. As an eclectic practitioner, however, Patricia utilizes techniques from other therapeutic models in accordance to a client's diagnostic/treatment needs.
It is believed that individuals and families have the capability and personal expertise necessary to resolve life difficulties. Instead of focusing on the problem, she empowers clients to identify their resilience, resourcefulness and systems of support where she guides clients through the process of discovering their aspirations and developing solutions.
